Hands

"Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm, as you get older, remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others."
- Audrey Hepburn

Today was a good day. It started off with a bang when I saw that the sun was making an appearance, after a long rainy day yesterday. While I did get a workout in early yesterday morning the walk that I took in the evening was anything but invigorating. I'm not sure if it was the rain or if it was just one of those, "everyone else eats whatever and doesn't work out", type of days. I did push myself and got at least 2km.

Today on the other hand, there was not really any deliberate form of exercise. I do get weighed tomorrow and I think my body deserved to relax after working out everyday since Thursday. Thats not to say though that I sat around like a bump on a log. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Ashley and Lucas today. This is the first time I've ever met Ashley and Rick's little guy and he didn't disappoint!

Knowing that sometimes little ones can be shy, I thought ahead and bought an ice breaker in the form of two hand puppets (crocodile and elephant). It wasn't long and he came out of his shell and showed me just how active he is. Kudos to all parents! Your job is hard. All in all Lucas is a well behaved, fun, energetic boy with the darkest brown eyes I've ever seen. Too cute.

It was great to see Ashley again. It's been far too long, but its good to know that true friends can fall back to each other and keep a conversation going about their lives like no time has passed. For those that don't know, I've known Ashley since grade one and we grew up not far from each other. It was great to spend the morning/afternoon in their company.

After supper Trev and I headed into do our usual Costco routine with Amanda and Ethan. E didn't get his usual ice cream treat but has raspberries with me instead. He didn't seem to mind and it made me feel better to have someone else enjoying them with me, while Trev and Manda enjoyed their fries/poutine.

My realization for the day though came on the way home. Once sitting in the car I folded my hands in my lap and then laced my fingers together. Good lord, even my hands are changing now. Knuckles are emerging more, the skin texture is changing and my fingers are looking more slender. The first thought though was that I could stand to lose the weight in other areas but if this is the game plan my body has in mind, I'll wait for the next round.
Hands are amazing and tell a lot about a person. One of the coolest experience I ever had at a party was having a girl read my palm and tell me things about myself that she could not have known because we had just met. She also read the palms of some of my coworkers she was meeting for the first time and friends. Was crazy. Maybe it was mind blowing because I was half in the bag due to it being our goodbye party from work, but non the less, super cool.

Hands do incredible things and simple things. The thing I miss the most...holding my grandmothers hand. I'd give up a five minute conversation for a minute of hand holding. Being able to connect with someone like that, even in silence, sometimes gives you more than the longest talk ever could. A simple squeeze lets you know its all alright.

While my hands are changing in appearance, I hope they are telling people good things about me.  This year for winter, their getting a new pair of leather gloves.

Raspberry smiles,
